6 Items To Take With You For A Day On The Lake
Sitting quietly tucked away in the great state of Utah. Deer Creek Lake. It is outside of a quiet little town called Heber and nestled in the mountains. We planned a day out on the lake and wanted to prepare for a wonderful day in the sun. Our 6 items to take with you for a day on the lake will help you plan your next visit to the water.
Utah’s elevation is higher, leading to dehydration quickly. If you are headed out to the lake, make sure you take a gallon of water to drink while you are soaking in the sun and enjoying an ice peaceful day on the water. Water is key to keeping your body hydrated. I enjoy putting some pink salt and lime in mine. This is an easy homemade electrolyte booster for staying hydrated on the boat. I bring a gallon per person and a cooler full of ice to keep all my water needs chilled.
Don’t forget your sunscreen. Spending most of your day in the sun, it is important to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you head out and continually apply sunscreen so you don’t burn your skin. If you are in the water or sweating a lot, make sure to reapply sunscreen every 30 minutes. Even if it is cloudy and overcast, 80% of the sun’s damaging rays still reach the earth and can cause skin damage. Hat & Sunglasses
Protecting your scalp and eye is just as important as protecting your skin. Sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection and polarized lens to help with glare from the water. As we age, our pupils grow larger and more sensitive to light. Making sure we have proper protection for our eyes is crucial. When buying sunglasses, here are my 6 reminders to check for.
- Check for the UV sticker to make sure you are covered form the sun’s harmful rays.
- Go for a bigger lens. These large lenses will help with the sun’s UV rays coming in from the sides.
- Dark lenses don’t always protect better, lenses that are amber or brown work better.
- Amber, green, and grey lens create more contrast in colors, so are usually better than dark black lenses.
- Remember polarized lenses cut glare but do not protect against UV rays. Polarized lenses help with reflections and glare and make outdoor activities more enjoyable.
- Sunglasses don’t need to cost a lot of money to protect your eyes. The less expensive lens that is marked with 100% UV-blocking is just as effective as more expensive glasses.
A hat with a wide brim and drawstring so it does not fly off your head when the boat gets up to speed. You could also use a baseball cap. Pick one that has an adjustable strap so you can tighten on your head. Tighten it a little tiger than normal, once the boat picks up speed, you don’t want to lose your cap. Remember these brims do not cover the entire face. You will want to apply sunscreen and make sure you find some shade to prevent burning your skin.
If you will be carrying any valuables or electronics, a watertight bag is important. If you don’t have one, a Ziploc bag will do. Remember, these bags will protect your electronics if by chance some water gets in the boat. I like to put all of my valuables such as wallet, phone, medicine, and car keys in this Ziploc bag. This extra layer of protection will help you just in case lots of water get in the boat. Better safe than sorry in this case. We were on a boat a few days ago and my husband forgot to put his phone, car keys, and wallet in a Ziploc bag, and sure enough during a wake, the water came into the boat and got in the budget his bag was in. All his items were drenched in water, and his phone was completely ruined.
A day on the lake is full of sunbathing, jumping in the water to cool off, and relaxing. Don’t forget a towel to protect your skin when you are laying in the boat, and to dry off after that refreshing dip in the lake. A towel is great to create shade just in case you are in the sun for a long time. You can prop the towel up to create a hammock to protect your skin from the harmful rays. When choosing a towel for your day on the lake, pick a very absorbent fabric like terr. This material is thick, soaks up moisture fast, provides warmth and comfort when lying on the boat. You can also choose cotton. Pick an Egyptian or Turkish Cotton, these tend to be more absorbent.
Yummy snacks are important to nourish your body when you are on the lake all day. Some of my favorite snacks to bring are cheese, salami, celery, broccoli, strawberries, and homemade ranch. Clean and cut up all your snacks and put in a Ziploc bag so you can put them in the cooler with ice and not worry about water getting into the food. If you want snacks that are a little more convenient, chips, beef jerky, and cookies are a fun treat.
