United States: A new study shows that cases of babesiosis, a disease spread by ticks, have been rising by about 9% each year from 2015 to 2022 in the U.S. Nearly half of the people with babesiosis also had another tick-borne disease, like Lyme disease.
The study was done by researchers from Penn State Health and Penn State College of Medicine.
I spoke to Ssentongo about tick borne illness and he said: “These findings imply that clinicians should enhance their suspicion of other co infections _other tick-borne diseases in patients admitted with babesiosis. “Besides the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, ticks can also host other bacteria that lead to other tick-borne diseases such anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis.”
General Information about Babesiosis and Incidence of the Disease

They presented these results in the Open Forum Infectious Diseases, knowledge base.
As reported by SciTechDaily, this particular Babesiosis which is also known as “American malaria” – an infectious disease that affects people after a bite from a black-legged tick carrying the Babesia parasite and also hereby it’s being produced mainly in the Northeastern and Midwestern regions of the country. It is, for example, similar to malaria in that the parasite lodges in red blood cells, and clinical expressions are rather similar too.

The CDC points to the fact that the cases of babesiosis, which is a disease transmitted through ticks, has been on the rise. Another researcher Ssentongo pointed out that could be due to climate change.
Climate change affecting the duration and scale of temperatures, humidity, rainfall, and seasonality has affected not only the premises of occurrence of ticks but also affected the concentration of animals such as deer, which is a host to the ticks. This may lead to ticks to be found in more places than earlier it was observed.
To determine crypBAB epidemiology, including current rates of babesiosis and Babesia co-infections, and to assess how Babesia co-infection affects mortality risk, the authors queried TriNetX, a national clinical database containing data on >250 million patients. ByEPROMA 3,521 confirmed cases of Babesiosis from October 2015 to December 2022 were identified.
