Mpox Surge in US State: 11 New Cases Reported, Health Authorities Warn

United States: The health authorities have sounded alarm regarding the upsurge seen in the cases linked to mpox in 2024. The authorities have claimed that the disease has seen a sudden increase during the current year.

Recently, a sudden increase was reported by the state Department of Public Health of Connecticut, which stated that around a dozen residents of the county tested positive for the disease.

According to the preliminary information shared by the health officials, as many as eleven (11) people have been tested positive for the infection and they all age between 20 to 50 years and are residents of counties including Fairfield, New London, New Haven and Hartford.

While sharing the details of the Department of Public Health in a statement mentioned, “The majority of these patients have not been hospitalized,” according to reports by wtnh.com.

Mpox and its roots!

The health department has outlined that in the year 2023, approximately four (4) residents of Connecticut tested positive for mpox, and in 2022, the count reached up to 145 cases. In addition to this, the officials have mentioned that, as of now, the state has not reported any deaths linked to the disease.

The Department of Public Health Commissioner – Manisha Juthani, MD, was quoted saying, “Fortunately, we are in a far different place than we were in 2022 thanks to the availability of the mpox vaccine and greater awareness.”

She further outlined, “Mpox spreads through close, prolonged contact with an infected person. This might include coming into contact with skin lesions or bodily fluids, sharing clothes or other materials that have been used by an infected person, or inhaling respiratory droplets during prolonged face-to-face contact,” as reported by wtnh.com.

Health officials have revealed that the maximum number of current cases in Connecticut have been reported among bisexual, gay, and other men who perform sex with men. Additionally, they outlined that people who have multiple or anonymous sex partners also have a high chance of catching the disease.

Vaccination against mpox!

The experts have appealed to the people who are at risk for mpox to get vaccinated against the disease. As per the officials, an individual must take two doses of vaccine so that maximum protection is attained.
