United States: COVID-19 has become a major threat across the US; during this crucial time, experts have discovered a revolutionary needleless treatment for those who have a fear of needles.
The new mucosal COVID-19 vaccine could become a game-changer not only as a treatment against the infection but also for people who are needle-phobic.
The briefs about this next-generation vaccine were published in Nature Communications and have been published by researchers at New Griffith University. Recently, health experts have been testing the efficacy of the vaccine, which will enter the human body via the nasal passages.
The research has been conducted by Professor Suresh Mahalingam, who is from Griffith’s Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics. According to the reports, the research has been carried out for more than four years.
Professor Mahalingam, while announcing the benefits of the vaccine, mentioned, “This is a live attenuated intranasal vaccine, called CDO-7N-1, designed to be administered intranasally, thereby inducing potential mucosal immunity as well as systemic immunity with just a single dose.”
The expert was further quoted saying, “The vaccine induces strong memory responses in the nasal mucosa, offering long-term protection for up to a year or more. It’s been designed to be administered as a single dose, ideally as a booster vaccine, as a safe alternative to needles with no adverse reactions in the short or long term.”

Further, the experts mentioned that vaccines also have several advantages compared to other vaccine approaches. For instance, with just a single dose, it offers potent and long-lived cellular immunity.
In addition to this, the lead author of the study, Dr Xiang Liu, mentioned that the vaccine is believed to offer protection against all COVID-19 variants, which have been listed as variants of concern. It can also neutralize the capacity against the SARS-CoV-1 virus.
Dr Liu was quoted saying, “The vaccine offers potent protection against transmission, prevents reinfection and the spread of the virus, while also reducing the generation of new variants.”
In addition to this, the expert outlined, “Unlike the mRNA vaccine, which targets only the spike protein, CDO-7N-1 induces immunity to all major SARS-CoV-2 proteins and is highly effective against all major variants to date. Importantly, the vaccine remains stable at 4°C for seven months, making it ideal for low- and middle-income countries.”
What could be possible future prospects?
A major vaccine manufacturer, Indian Immunologicals Ltd, has been licensed to produce the vaccine.
While addressing the same, the Managing Director of Indian Immunologicals Ltd and the co-author of the publication – Dr K Anand Kumar stated, “We are a leading ‘One Health’ company that has developed and launched several vaccines for human and animal use in India and are currently exporting to 62 countries.”

He further stated, “We have completed all the necessary studies of this novel COVID-19 vaccine, which offers tremendous advantages over other vaccines. We now look forward to taking the vaccine candidate to clinical trials.”
Along with this, the acting director of the Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics, Prof Lee Smith, expressed joyfulness regarding the research findings.
Smith was quoted saying, “These results towards developing a next-generation COVID-19 vaccine are truly exciting. Our researchers are dedicated to providing innovative and, crucially, more accessible solutions to combat this high-impact disease.”
