New COVID Variants Surge Across the US, Prompting Vaccine Updates

New COVID Variants Surge Across the US

United States: The new variants of SARS-CoV-2 – the virus responsible for COVID pandemic – have been once again circulating, across the United States. According to the reports by health officials, the newly circulation variants are responsible for small increase in the total number of cases linked to the virus.

New Variants of COVID!

According to the health experts of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the new variants have been named “FLiRT,” which can be described as a “whole family of different variants – including KP.2, JN1.7 and any other variants starting with KP or JN – that appear to have independently picked up the same set of mutations,” as reported by delawareonline.com.

These new variants belong to the family of JN.1 variant – which was behind the surge in COVID-19 cases during the late spring, as per the stats by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

How infectious are the FLiRt Variants?

According to the official data, the KP.3 sub-variant of the COVID infection became a dominating variant on June 8. Prior to this, the KP.2 variant was dominant, followed by JN.1.

Along with KP.3, other variants which are dominating are KP.2, LB.1 and KP.1.1. The data has been shared by the CDC Nowcast.

Will the COVID vaccine act as a savior?

The surge during the fall came with the concerns linked to vaccines. It has been reported that during the current season, public health officials, including the World Health Organization and the Federal Drug Administration, have been working together to develop a vaccine formula that will be effective against the currently circulating strain.

The health experts have outlined that the major goal of the experts is to develop a vaccine which will be effective against all COVID variants. The guidelines linked to COVID-19 fall vaccine 2024 was shared by both FDA and the WHO, earlier in June.

While addressing the concern, the FDA noted, “Available data suggest that updating the current formula of COVID-19 vaccines to more closely match currently circulating JN.1 lineage viruses is warranted for the anticipated 2024-2025 respiratory virus season in the US,” according to delawareonline.com.

Don’t Avoid COVID and Vaccine Guidance!

With the increasing cases linked to COVID, the concerns of health experts have also been increasing. Health experts and medical practitioners have been asking the general public to stay up to date on vaccination and get tested as soon as they witness any of the symptoms linked to the disease.

While elaborating on COVID’s vaccine and its effectiveness towards XXB lineage, the CDC outlined, “The 2023–2024 updated COVID-19 vaccines more closely targets the XBB lineage of the Omicron variant and could restore protection against severe COVID-19 that may have decreased over time. We anticipate the updated vaccines will be better at fighting currently circulating variants,” as reported by delawareonline.com.

The federal health agency has also added that there is no specifical recommendation for preferential COVID-19 vaccine, an individual can go for any of the updated versions of vaccines.
