United States: Until mid-July, the US state of Colorado has reported as many as six (6) human cases linked to avian flu – or H5N1 virus. The recently reported cases have taken the national tally up to ten (10), according to the data shared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The first-ever human case linked to the virus was reported in April 2024. Zoonotic testing has been increased by the government of the United States to discover the spread of the infection in mammals, including cows. The official stats have revealed that as many as 160 herds of cows have been reported infections.
A high risk of human transmission!
A recent study published in the journal Nature has revealed that the heightened infection rate among cows might increase the risk for human transmission. As a pre-pandemic preparation, the government of the United States has given around USD 176 million to Moderna to provide assistance to clinical trials for an mRNA vaccine.

Along with the US, other nations have also been working to develop vaccines against the disease.
The experts have outlined that the intensity through which the new cases linked to the infection have been reported have increased the threat linked to the another pandemic. However, there is no certainty of pandemic, but the experts have urged the general public and the medical practitioners to be prepared for it.

The health experts have been continuously appealing the authorities to avoid repeating mistakes linked to COVID-19 pandemic, especially with H5N1 virus where the risk is even higher due to its high mortality rate. Another worry is linked to lack of commercially available diagnostic tests to detect the presence of H5N1 virus in humans.

The recent emergence of H5N1 cases in Colorado, while not apocalyptic, is a clarion call that demands our attention. The United States and other affluent nations possess the means to counter such outbreaks, but impoverished regions, lacking resources and technological access, find themselves perilously vulnerable.
