US Faces Growing Threat of Lyme Disease

United States: With increasing heat, tick-borne diseases have become a quite common and due to which concerns associated with same have also been mounted due to increase in the cases of Lyme Disease.

The authorities have outlined that greater risk has been linked to the tiny ticks, carrying mighty illnesses. The most prone areas are northeast, the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic regions.

Increase in Cases Linked to Lyme Disease!

According to the official stats, the number of cases of Lyme disease in the United States have reached up to 62,551 in 2022. However, the count was nearly half, i.e. 33,000 a year, during the previous decade. The data has been shared by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to USA Today.

CDC has further outlined that the tick bites are very common and the most common infection caused due to the same is Lyme Disease.

Demographic Spread of Infection!

Amid the increasing cases, the health agency has shared the demographic spread of the infection across the United States. In 2022, the incidence of Lyme disease reached approximately 63,000 cases, yet according to CDC estimations, the actual prevalence of this elusive illness may exceed tenfold the reported figures.

Some of the US states have been witnessing an increased rate of infections, as compared to the others. The highest rate of infection has been seen in Connecticut; higher infection rates have been also witnessed in:

  3. Maine
  4. Maryland
  5. Massachusetts
  6. Minnesota
  7. New Hampshire
  8. New Jersey
  9. New York
  10. Pennsylvania
  11. Rhode Island
  12. Vermont
  13. Virginia
  14. West Virginia
  15. Wisconsin

Major reason behind surge in tick-borne diseases!

The experts have noted that the population of ticks have been increased and reached to the new regions, with rise in the global temperature. This has been putting more people at risk of ticks and illness caused due to same.

It has also been predicted that the number of cases will continue to rise annually.

While addressing the concern, the US Environmental Protection Agency mentioned, “Deer ticks are mostly active when temperatures are above 45 degrees Fahrenheit, and they thrive in areas with at least 85% humidity. Thus, warming temperatures associated with climate change are projected to increase the range of suitable tick habitat,” as reported by USA Today.

While briefing about the spread of the infection in 2022, the CDC outlined that the highest rate of the infection caused by Lyme Disease was reported in Rhode Island, Vermont, and Maine. Rhode Island reported as many as 212 cases per 100,000 people, followed by Vermont, which reported 204 cases per 100,000 people, and Maine, which reported 194.7 cases per 100,000.

Along with this, the authorities have mentioned that Pennsylvania was the hub for Lyme disease – as many as seven (7) counties out of 10 were most affected – between 2016 and 2019. Due to the same, Pennsylvania was responsible for 30 percent of the Lyme Disease cases during the years, according to the data shared by USAFacts.

Common Symptoms Experienced by Infected Individuals!

Some of the common symptoms experienced by an infected individuals are bullseye rash, muscle pain, joint aches, chills and fever, as well as fatigue. According to the experts, if the disease is left untreated, it could led to severe heart, joint and neurological problems.
