United States: Along with COVID and other infections, the health authorities of the United States are also worried about the spread of Eastern Encephalitis virus, which is also known as EEE. The health organizations have mentioned that several towns in Massachusetts have announced that they have been spraying mosquito repellent to protect the residents.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also been actively working to detect the spread of the infection. The health agency has mentioned that Triple E is generally transmitted through a bite of an infected mosquito and can result in a “rare but severe illness.”
According to the official statistics, the number of annual cases linked to the infection is low, but they all pose a significant threat to human health. According to the CDC, the majority of the infected people don’t witness symptoms, but in some cases, the symptoms might range from febrile illness to severe as well as contagious neurological problems, according to ABC News.
In some cases, the disease may also result in health problems like encephalitis, which is also known as inflammation in the brain. It is to be noted that in most cases, if a person suffers from encephalitis, he/ she loses their life due to the infection.
As per the reports by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if an individual survives the infection, he or she might experience long-term neurological issues. The prevention of the illness is uncurable because there is no known treatment or vaccine against the infection.
High Concerns of the Massachusetts Officials!
According to health experts, the officials of Massachusetts have reported the first-ever case linked to Triple E infection of the year 2024. It is noteworthy that the case is the first ever since 2020, as reported by ABC News.
The agencies mentioned that the cases linked to the Triple E have been detected in three states in the US: Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont. In the past, the highest number of Triple E cases was found in the year 2019; the count reached 38 cases, as per the CDC.
The Department of Public Health of the state has also outlined that around ten communities of Massachusetts are under critical risk due to the virus. The most high-risk communities of the state included Carver, Dudley, Middleborough, Northbridge, Plymouth, and Uxbridge.
Along with this, the critical-risked communities are Webster, Sutton, Douglas, and Oxford.
To counter the attack, the health experts have outlined that they will be conducting aerial spraying in certain parts of Plymouth County, and in the parts of Worcester County, the spraying will be done by truck.
Health authorities have been aiming to mitigate the populations of mosquitoes, which are the primary spreaders of the virus, as per ABC News.
The Department of Public Health of Massachusetts has outlined that they have been using pesticides which is used in Anvil 10+10. The product was “extensively tested and used in both ground-level and aerial spraying in the US to control mosquitoes,” by an Environmental Protection Agency.
According to the reports published by the agency, Anvil 10+10 is proven to be “highly effective in killing mosquitoes” and has been used for the same purpose for over two decades.
As per Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources commissioner – Ashley Randle, “Due to the increased EEE risk and the first human case of the season, the state is taking decisive action to protect public health.” The expert shared the statement during a press release.
Randle further mentioned, “Aerial spraying will target mosquitoes carrying the EEE virus. While these measures are crucial for reducing transmission risk, it’s vital for everyone to stay vigilant and follow personal protection guidelines to safeguard our community.”
