United States: After an extensive four-year investigation and nearly 200 pediatric blood samples from across the nation, researchers in San Francisco have unraveled the enigma of a severe illness that left many children teetering on the brink of death.
About a year ago, Dr Aaron Bodansky saw more young patients being rushed to the ICU because of this unexplained inflammation, in 2020.
An assistant professor of pediatrics and critical care at UCSF, Dr Bodansky, said, “These children arrived at the hospitals with dangerously high fever; the inflammation had spread throughout their bodies and mainly affected the lungs and heart, making their heart pump blood to keep their body organs functioning,” according to the reports by abc7news.com.
This strange illness was eventually renamed as Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome in Children, or MIS-C.

What was most frightening was that the cause of the disease could not even be guessed at. The only thing that joined the patients was a history of having been through SARS-CoV-2. Approximately one month later, they would develop this severe, mysterious condition that put them on the precipice of death, Dr Bodansky explained.
When the number of cases rose, the medical practitioners started to think that the severe inflammation was perhaps associated with the immune system as per the options in abc7news.com.
It was very effective when we used medications that were antigens and interfered with their immune response,” Dr. Bodansky pronounced, smiling.
Dr Bodansky recalled a particularly harrowing moment with one of his patients.
“We had to intubate him, administer medication to induce a coma and employ a cocktail of potent drugs to keep his heart functioning. It was incredibly difficult to face the parents and admit that we had no explanation for what was happening. I knew I couldn’t continue without answers,” Dr Bodansky said.
In his quest for understanding, Dr Bodansky reached out to leading infectious disease experts and scientists in San Francisco, the reports by abc7news.com outlined.
“I contacted world-renowned scientists in the field, particularly an immunologist named Mark Anderson. The key figure, however, was Joe DeRisi, who had pioneered a groundbreaking technology that allowed us to simultaneously analyze the entire immune system’s response,” Dr Bodansky explained.
Their collaboration eventually led to a breakthrough years later.
“We partnered with a group coordinated by the CDC and Adrienne Randolph, who played a central role in gathering samples from across the country. These samples were sent to us as the central hub, where we utilized Biohub and Joe DeRisi’s technology to profile the entire immune system in all of the samples,” Dr. Bodansky said.
The team collected 199 blood samples from children nationwide.
“With this data, we were able to pinpoint the differences in the immune response of children who developed the disease compared to those who had COVID but did not develop MIS-C. This was the key to solving the mystery,” Dr Bodansky said.
Dr Joe DeRisi, the president of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco and a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, described the illness as one of the enduring riddles of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This has been a conundrum that researchers and clinicians worldwide have grappled with, and it has eluded nearly everyone until now,” said Dr DeRisi.
Dr DeRisi vividly remembered the moment they made the pivotal connection, according to the reports by abc7news.com.
“The ‘eureka’ moment came when we realized that the unusual immune reaction to COVID was mirroring something within our own immune system. It had acquired a target against COVID that matched an element of our own biology, leading it to attack both simultaneously,” Dr DeRisi explained.
The researchers hope their findings will propel scientific advancements and aid in treating other diseases.
“Understanding that a virus can trigger an autoimmune response and having this evidence opens the door to developing potential therapeutics and diagnostics for similar occurrences in the future,” Dr DeRisi concluded.
