Scientists Identify Fatal Virus Behind Nationwide Superworm Die-Off 

United States: Rutgers University scientists have discovered a new virus that is killing superworms, which are important food for pets and are even used as protein for humans. The virus has caused a nationwide die-off of these worms. 

By using advanced technology called cryo-electron microscopy, the scientists were able to study the virus in detail. This discovery is important because it helps scientists find new viruses and pathogens, which could help prevent future outbreaks in animals, plants, and humans. 

This research, published in the journal Cell, offers new ways to identify and manage dangerous diseases that could affect many living things. 

Advanced Methods of Study in Virology 

As reported by the SciTechDaily, employing the using chopped-up beetle carcasses forming a slurry and an electron microscope cooled by liquid nitrogen, the scientists identified what they have called Zophobas morio black wasting virus.

The name was gotten from the manner by which the virus killed a species of darkling beetle , Zophobas morio, originally from the subtropics, though the insect in its larval form looks like large brown superworms when it comes out of the eggs. This species was christened superworm because its larvae reached about 2 inches in size much larger than other feeds. 

Solving the Puzzle of Superworm 

Jason Kaelber of IQB at Rutgers-New Brunswick co-authored this paper and the main researcher Judit Penzes is a post-doctoral fellow at IQB. 

“Judit was trying to find the cause for why beetle farmers were losing all their super worm colonies to this deadly disease, and I was trying to figure out how to create new methods of identifying new viruses that does not involve DNA or RNA sequencing,” Kaelber said. “We actually stumbled upon the virus that has been circulating in the country and that is fatal to superworms.” 

Investigations started over a year ago, when Penzes a molecular virologist contacted beetle farm owners whose superworms died mysteriously at high rates. Penzes had previously gained fame in the field for other works in which she only sampled a virus that was decimating crickets, another popular feed for pet animals. 

Lab Techniques in Investigation 

She began with harvesting the superworms from pet stores across New Jersey first. “Whenever I went to a pet store, I first went to the feeder insect section, then opened the containers and looked at worms,” she said.  

They all were infected, and I told the owners of the stores what I was seeing a and that I was researching this virus and asked if I could have the container and they were immediately on the board and they also told me to take as many as I needed.
