United States: “Dead satellites, rocket parts, and even things like wrenches and gloves are floating in space,” said physicist Thomas Berger at a meeting in Washington, DC, on December 11. This space junk makes it harder to avoid collisions in Earth’s orbit.
With those identifiable objects, there are literally millions of pieces of debris orbiting at speeds faster than a bullet.
All that stuff is piling up and raising probability of big space crash, and that ain’t very good for space travelers, or outer space communication satellites.
As reported by the Business Insider, currently, space around the Earth is packed with debris so managing the orbits requires firing off some 100,000 alerts daily to satellite operators, Berger said.
For instance, Araz Feyzi, one of the co-founders of the orbital data firm Kayhan Space, said to BI in an email some of its customer satellites are receiving around 800 alerts per day from the US Space Force.
The other co-founder of Planet is Siamak Hesar who would later in SpaceNews opine that the firm monitors “more than 60,000 alerts per week for a constellation of around 100 satellites.”

Almost all of those warnings originate from a neighborhood of the Earth’s orbit at around 550 kilometers (340 miles) where SpaceX’s Starlink satellites reside.
“It is becoming harder to know which of these warnings is crucial and which should attract the operator’s attention,” said Berger, who is also the director of the Space Weather Technology, Research and Education Center at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
These alerts are given when the exact location of the trackers cannot predict the positions of objects in space hence they go off when objects are observed to be slightly closed to each other. Most of the times, only a few warnings conclude in an accident.
When space objects do collide, they propel high-speed fragments in different directions, thus generating still another zone of threat in orbit.
It could generate a chain reaction an unstoppable chain reaction of further collisions ultimately resulting in a completely filled-up space environment Berger said.
Thus, in the worst case, orbit can fill up with space debris to the point where there is nowhere that a new rocket could safely launch.
