Cardiovascular Deaths Rising for Young Adults in Rural US

United States: A new study shows that more people in rural areas are dying from heart disease. Between the years 2010 and 2022, the number of deaths from heart problems which actually went up by 21 percent for adults aged 25 to 64 in rural areas. But for older adults, 65 and older, who live in cities, the death rate from heart disease went down by 9 percent.

This study will be shared at a big heart health meeting in Chicago in November 2024.

The researchers also have involved data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s WONDER database to investigate national death data, based on over 11 million adults in the year 2010–2022.

As reported by the Medicalxpress, the research examined the cardiovascular mortality of the populace residing in the rural counties as compared to the rural or urban large metropolitan areas of the United States of America.

For the purpose of this study, the NCHS has categorized the population density as Large Metro as having population of more than 1 million people, Small/Medium Metro as having population of 250,001 to 999, 999 people, and Rural population as people living close to metro less than 50,000 and no metro.

“Previous work has shown that there is a variation of cardiovascular mortality rural and urban populations; prior to 2000 there were more deaths due to heart disease in rural populations than there were in urban populations,” explained lead author of the piece Dr Lucas X Marinacci, a cardiology fellow at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center who undertook this study, with Dr Rishi Wadhera, a post-doctoral research fellow at the same.

” Different population, especially rural, has higher cardiovascular risk factors’ prevalence, economic difficulties and limited access to health care services on account of hospital shut-downs, physician scarcity and poor rural health systems compromised by COVID-19.”

The study concluded that from 2010 to 2022, cardiovascular mortality has risen in the rural United States but declined in the urban setting, thereby, amplifying the rural-urban mortality gap.

Cardiovascular mortality was observed to have increased among the youth especially the urban poor and there was a worrying trend indicated that cardiovascular deaths that were occurring amongst the youthful population where majority of them were from the rural areas.

COVID-19 has been followed by an increase in cardiovascular mortality rates and the rate was higher in the rural population. Specifically:

The age adjusted cardiovascular mortality rate and the number of the deaths from the cardiovascular disease per 100,000 people and also hereby increased by 0.8 percent in the rural areas between the year 2010 and 2022 but also hereby decreases by 6.4 percent in the urban areas.

Also the younger, rural adults ages like 25 to 64 experienced a 21 percent relative increase in their cardiovascular death rate in the year 2022 compared to the year 2010, whereas the death rates among the younger adults in the urban areas increased by only 3  percent.
