United States: A massive earthquake can hit the fault line near Japan’s east coast, which possess a significant risk, according to the recent statement shared by the Seismological Society of China. The department has outlined that the earthquake will result in severe consequences for human population, infrastructure and economy.
The cautious headline has been shared by the authorities following a strong earthquake of a 7.1 magnitude hit the Nankai Trough of Kyushu island of Japan. The researchers for the China Earthquake Administration has warned that the magnitude of the anticipated major earthquake could range between 8.5 or could possibly reach up to 9.1, according to the reports.
Why the Authorities Have Issued Alerts?
It is estimated that such an event could result in tsunami of more than 33 feet height – destroying around 238,000 buildings. The experts are worried that such a natural occurrence may lead to the death of more than 320,000 people, along with this around 9,500,000 people may face displacement.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), while addressing the matter, Gao Mengtan stated, “Cities near the Nankai Trough, especially in the Chugoku and Kansai clusters, are key economic centers, accounting for 70 percent of Japan’s manufacturing.”
Mengtan further added, “An earthquake in this region would not only affect Japan’s manufacturing sector but also affect the global supply chain, with potential economic losses reaching 220 trillion yen (147 trillion USD), twice Japan’s annual budget,” Mengtan added.
A recent earthquake was reported in Japan!
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, an earthquake struck Kyushu on August 8. Following the same, the agency has also shared a warning about the higher chances of seismic activities in the upcoming weeks. However, the earthquake did not cause extensive damage, but it resulted in canceling travel plans, such as the Japanese Prime Minister – Fumio Kishida – canceled their official visit to Central Asia, as per reports.
The Japanese Cabinet Office has outlined that if no other major earthquake occurs, then the warning will be withdrawn by the afternoon of August 15.
Around 100 towns are under threat!
The Earthquake Research Committee of Japan has stated that such a strong earthquake may result in causing a strong tsunami alert which may impact numerous towns across several regions of the country. It is believed that the generated tsunami may damage more than 100 towns.
According to the reports by a Shanghai-based The Paper, Kyushu – also known for its semiconductor industry – is hub for more than 200 manufacturers and backs more than half of the semiconductors of Japan.
