United States: Infectious diseases are on the rise across the United States. Recently, more than 2,400 patients seeking treatment in hospitals in Portland, Oregon, were exposed to diseases such as hepatitis B, C, and HIV.
As per the preliminary information shared by the officials, the spread was due to negligence of anesthesiologist – who failed to follow the infection control practices. The Providence statement released on Thursday outlined that out of the total infections, around 2,200 people were tested positive from the diseases in Oregon City and remaining two (2) were reported in Portland. It is to be noted that the cases have been detected in Providence Medical Center.
The health experts have appealed the general public to get a free blood test to check whether they have caught infection or not. According to reports, Providence will “reach out to discuss their test results and next steps,” if an individual is tested positive for the infection.
Details about the physician!
Reportedly, the physician got employed by the Oregon Anesthesiology Group and was worked in the two (2) Providence facilities between 2017 and 2023. Along with this, during last six months of the year 2023, the physicial also worked at Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center in Gresham.
The reports by KGW-TV claimed that the physicians have sent the letters to around 221 patients which may have caught infection.
The statement by Oregon Anesthesiology Group!
The name and identification of the physicians have not been shared by the Group; however, they have assured that the physicians have been terminated. The official statement by the Group read, “When we learned that the physician had violated infection control practices, we suspended him, informed our partners Legacy Health and Providence, and then began an investigation that resulted in the physician’s termination.”
The statement further mentioned, “Even though the risk of infection was low, new protocols and procedures have been put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future.”
The Oregon Health Authority has been working jointly with Legacy and Providence to investigate the “breaches of infection control practices.” The Health Authority has mentioned that “So far, neither OHA nor the hospitals are aware of any reports of illness associated with this infection control breach,” the health authority said.
