Type 2 Diabetes Alert: Sleep Patterns Tied to Serious Blood Vessel Damage

United States: The experts and officials have revealed another threat associated with Type 2 diabetes. Accordingly, people experience short or long sleep duration and are more prone to microvascular disease. In addition to this, suffering people can also deal with damage to the small blood vessels, leading to serious complications in the future.

The study was published on Friday by Odense University Hospital in Denmark. According to the researchers, the microvascular complications that can be experienced are retinopathy and nephropathy. They also outlined that these two complications are highly associated with diabetes, according to certain reports.

Variations in sleep disorders!

According to the details shared by the experts in the study, the above-mentioned complications can increase if there is variation in sleep schedules.

As many as 369 people were studied to conduct the research. The majority of the people aged 62 years had high body mass index (BMI); along with this, people were also on antihypertensive medicine. Out of the total, around 28 percent of participants were dealing with long sleep duration, and 12 percent were having short sleep duration. However, 60 percent of the people had normal or ideal sleep.

The people suffering from short duration and long sleep duration had around 38 percent and 31 percent prevalence of microvascular damage. Along with this, the risk for people with optimal sleep was at risk by 18 percent.

The chances for developing the condition was 2.6 times higher for people with short sleep duration and the risk was 2.3 times higher in long sleep group – as compared to optimal sleep category.

The researchers further outlined that another influential factor was age. People aged 62 had 23 percent risk, and it increased by six (6) times for the people aged above 62, as per some reports.

The team of researchers mentioned, “Both short and long sleep durations are associated with a higher prevalence of microvascular disease compared to optimal sleep duration at night. Age amplifies the association between short sleep duration and microvascular disease, suggesting increased vulnerability among older individuals.”

The researchers have mentioned that further studies are necessary to figure out the link. However, the experts have advised to change the lifestyle to decrease the associated risks.
